About Me
Hello! My name is Mrs. Kelly and I teach social studies at my alma mater. History has been a passion of mine that was instilled in me at a very young age. Strolling through the streets of Colonial Williamsburg and the sand of Jamestowne Settlement showed me a world that was not only fascinating but that was so intricate in detail that I have spent many years trying to learn as much as I can about this distant world. Since that initial exploration into colonial history, I have been inspired by many great teachers and professors who have opened new worlds to me and have taken the time to really show me what the study of history is all about.
In my efforts to research and gain a better understanding about history, I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History, with a minor in English. Through this intensive undergraduate degree, I learned valuable research skills and successfully completed many intensive writing courses. I also had the opportunity to take courses in many different studies of history, allowing me to gain a broad perspective of different historical events and people. I feel that by successfully completing my bachelors degree and then obtaining my Masters of Arts in Teaching, that I can take the lessons I gained as an historian and apply them to the classroom. The Masters of Art in Teaching cultivated my transformation from an historian to an educator of history.
I strongly believe that every student is capable of learning and achieving their goals. The study of history allows for all types of learners to gain better perspective of the past through listening, seeing, and reading from those who have come before us. We will look at multiple perspectives in the classroom by participating in history. Through the use of primary sources, projects, presentations, portfolios, and simulations, students will be emerged in history. It is my belief that students should be an historian in the classroom and practice the skills that historians use everyday. I will bring my background in research and writing to help students prepare for the rigor involved in writing in the history classroom, which will allow them to gain valuable skills that extend into every other course students will take in high school and beyond.
